Tips for Getting Petition Sign-Ups
Got some time and want to help animals by getting petition sign-ups to help advance the latest animal rights campaign but don’t know how to go about it? Well, petaDishoom to the rescue! We promise to make you a pro by the time you’re done with this page.
If you live outside of India, try collecting petition sign-ups for peta2. Learn how by clicking here. Otherwise read on.
Download a petition. You can count on petaDishoom for regular missions that involve getting petition sign-ups, and you can download our latest petition(s). See our latest missions at On the Road to Action.
Target a busy location. Great locations to get petition sign-ups include the college canteen, major shopping areas, busy college walkways, coffee shops and other hang-outs, shows or college events. Keep your ears and eyes open for upcoming events in your city, such as college festivals and rock concerts (e.g., I-Rock, IIT Delhi’s Rendezvous, etc.). Try passing a petition around before class begins too!
Collect sign-ups. Approach people and ask them to sign up by giving you their name and e-mail address, but make sure they write legibly (or just write it yourself)! When you submit your petition (or a copy of it) to petaDishoom, we can then e-mail these people with other information about animal rights.
Get there on time. If you plan to collect petition sign-ups at an event, show up at the venue about 30 minutes before the doors open with some clipboards, a few pens, and a stack of petitions. If you are attending the event, just have someone save your place in line or a spot inside. Walk up and down the line outside the venue while people are waiting to get in and ask everyone to sign up. You don’t even need permission from the event organiser to gather sign-ups from people who are waiting in a line outside the venue before a show starts. All you have to do is approach individuals and ask them to sign up. You can do this at a large festival you’re attending or outside a show that you’re not even going to.
Make your pitch short and sweet. Say, “Please sign our petition to help animals”. If they hesitate, just say, “It only takes 10 seconds!” as you hold the petition and pen out to them. They won’t be able to resist.
Be friendly and upbeat. Smile and enjoy yourself.
Calm their concerns.Tell those concerned that their e-mail address won’t be given to anyone other than petaDishoom and that they will only get an e-mail from petaDishoom occasionally letting them know about other animal-related issues, contests with awesome prizes, celebrity interviews and other cool stuff on the site .
Don’t get discouraged. Hey, what’s the worst that can happen? Some people may say, “No”? When that happens, just move on to the next person and forget about them.
Take friends along. You don’t need to do it alone. You can bring as many friends with you as you like. Even if your friends don’t care about animals like you do, they still might like the free stuff petaDishoom offers for enough sign-ups and want to help. Arm them with paper and pens, tell them what to say, and send them to collect sign-ups.
Have two or three clipboards filled with petitions per person. Once one person stops, others will follow. With multiple clipboards, multiple people can sign up at once and you can gather signatures more efficiently.
Put several copies of the petition on each clipboard. Tie a pen to the clipboard with a string so it doesn’t “disappear.” If you are outside, use a rubber band to prevent the petitions from flapping around.
Offer signers more information. Give everyone who signs up a leaflet, sticker or both so they can learn more about animal rights and help promote the message to others. We’ll send you these materials for free if you need them—just let us know well in advance by writing to StreetTeamIndia@petaindia.org.
Send the sign-ups to us. Send the petitions you collect (or a copy of them) to us at StreetTeamIndia@petaindia.org or petaDishoom.com, PO Box 28260, Juhu, Mumbai 400 049, and earn cool stuff. Keep checking our missions to learn what great prizes we’re offering for collecting petition sign-ups.
There you go!
