Ace
Ace spent the first 11 years of his life in a cage at a “puppy mill”, a breeding kennel that raises dogs in cramped, crude, filthy conditions and then sells them for profit. He was rescued after a PETA investigation exposed horrific conditions at the mill and US federal authorities closed it down. Dogs from American puppy mills are also exported overseas. People who have the time, resources, love and space for dogs should adopt them from animal shelters.
Champa and Friends
The PETA India staff joined forces with People for Animals (PFA) and local police officials to rescue Champa and other dirty, bedraggled geese from a restaurant where they swam in a shallow pond in front of the window to entertain diners. One of the birds had a broken wing, and another had a mutilated claw. Seven other geese were confiscated from pools of dirty water at a furniture showroom.
All the birds were taken to an animal hospital for treatment, and police charged the restaurant and showroom owners under India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Nina
Nina lived in an overcrowded enclosure with six other hippopotamuses at the Mumbai Zoo. She had dirty water to swim in and crowded surroundings. As a result of a case filed by PETA and with the help of the Central Zoo Authority, Nina was moved to a better facility in Surat, where she has plenty of space, fresh water and food.
A few deer, porcupines, peacocks, two hippopotamuses and a black Himalayan bear were similarly released from the Mumbai Zoo after PETA won its case in Mumbai High Court.
Mohan Bear
Mohan was a lonely Himalayan bear incarcerated in a tiny cave in the Mumbai Zoo. He had a dirty moat in which he could not cool himself, visitors used to taunt him constantly, and he had no mate. As a result of a case filed by PETA and with the help of the Central Zoo Authority, Mohan was moved to a better facility, where he has a huge pond to swim in, a waterfall to lie beneath, fresh fruit to eat and a female bear to play with.
