Hi . I was gifted 4 guppies last night. (They're fishes) They're very beautiful . But, I don't think they're too happy living in a bowl in my house. I want to know if i can let them into any sea/ocean or other water body . Also, I am either supposed to feed them Hitachi bowl(I don't know what that is! ) or a 'cube'-which is dried worms! And where can I get them food from?? Because most petshops aren't too animal-friendly right..? Please help! Fast. (My guppies are hungry! ) |

I think I had already seen the first link... But thanks anyway, Niranjan. I got their food and everything..but I still don't know whether I can put them in some water body or something... Turns out they're tropical fish, and so, they're found in Phillipines and Indonesia and places like that... |

Please don't put them in any water body because they will die within hours, or rather will get ripped and eaten. If your kinda like feeling guilty, then beg your parents for an aquarium, thats just what i have done. I hav for about 20 fishes in a huge aquarium, in my house. When and if i go to a fish shop and see some fishes not kept in proper conditions, or i surely think they are not happy in that filthy little confined space, then i purchase them and bring them home. Atleast here(house) they have clean water all the required stuff, food etc. whereas there in the shop they are either sold off or wait to die a slow death.
So, i think you need an aquarium at the earliest, with a water pump and a automatic temperature regulator, keepin in mind winter is commin.
Also, tropical fish will never survive in waters from which they dont belong, people might think they are doing great deeds by setting fish free in rivers etc. but they are wrong as the fishes are sure to die as they can't accomodate and adjust themselves tht easily. Also the water type is different, and these days all major water bodies are heavily polluted, thanks to us(DORKISH HUMANS).

When you buy animals, you support their cruel business . . . Tell them to improve the conditions; clean up d tanks, etc...

Yup, I too try and tell them, and mostly their reply is "Kharidna hai to lo, nahi toh please jao, hamei aur bhi bahut kaam hai."And i'm like "aur bhi kaam hai, janver hi toh baech rahe ho!!"
But sometimes when i feel cruelty to fishes is beyond limits and there is no hope for improvement, I buy them (if their within my budget). Same for other small animals !
It is horrible to firstly see animal cruelty and its even worse if you don't do anything about it and let the animals suffer in those pet shops. I feel if they are suffering, buy them if you can, but preventive check- always tell the shopkeepers to keep them in better conditions.
I don't know about others, but i can't let see animals suffer, that's why I went in for 2 rabbits. Cuz, on one hand i am doing all this Animal Activist/Activism thingy and on the other hand I am supposed to fold a "blind eye" towards animal suffering in pet shops, as far as im comcerned my conscience does'nt agree with it !
And also the term "PET SHOP" does not always mean shops with glass doors, windows, fans, tiles, cages, telephone etc. Most of the shops are set up by illetrate locals. These shops are temporary settlements near roads or near markets, under flyovers or even in "Sunday Markets". The animals and birds are kept under the direct sun for hours at a stretch, due to which small birds(love birds)sometimes faint. I can't see such things and just pass by......thinking one day this will change and stop, or heyy why does'nt anybody do something about this !

problem is vibhor, when you buy them they will just get replaced by more fish. it is just like eating at KFC. you provide them with demand they increase their supply.
i understand you cant bear to see suffering but in the larger scheme of things you are supporting the industry.
if you want to the fish don't pay the shopkeepers. steal them if you have to. |

Totally Rashmi, When ever i see any animal or fish or bird and can't stand the cruelty being endured to it, i simple beg my parents and buy them. I don't give a shit to people who say your buying and supporting their trade, cuz i know thts true but then whts our duty as animal lovers and activists- just to see them and pass by! .....wont tht be being heartless......
I had recently (few months back) seen this shop person with love birds, but could'nt help but stop and see them from close, and when i did tht,i saw they were soo miserable and sad...so i bought them (4 of them)...but then tht thought of caging them hounded me...but again i said to myself how can i just leave them here, cuz if they die they will just be thrown off in the dustinbin....whereas in my house atleast they will hav a chance of living.....wid clean food and water and 24x7 care..... also setting them open was and never will be an option for them cuz they are australian love birds which will die in the harsh delhi climate(courtsey global warming)...........so thts how it is......and as for now they have bonded with me and i love them !
Hope ur turtle tale is somewht same.....
