Helping Animals with [V]

Channel [V] loves PETA, and PETA loves Channel [V]! In fact, Channel [V] just won PETA’s “Company of the Year” Proggy Award (“proggy” is short for “progress”).

[V]’s Luke Kenny is a long-time PETA supporter. We caught up with Luke at a party, and he told us that he has been vegetarian and leather-free since ’91. Luke says that it is “totally, totally” possible to be fashionable without wearing leather “because there are so many products out right now which look like leather, but they are not. You can’t tell the difference”. See our “Wicked Style” section for shopping tips, and keep checking this site for more about Luke – the night owl who keeps India rocking “after hours”.

The loving relationship between PETA and [V] grew when [V]’s adorable cartoon mascot, Professor Simpoo, said “balle balle” to vegetarianism. The Professor “modelled” a lettuce-leaf sarong to show off his healthy vegetarian body for a PETA advertisement. Declaring his support and love for animals around the world, Simpoo vowed to take his role as a champion for animals very seriously.

Download Simpoo’s ad for PETA, and make it your wallpaper. And no, this wallpaper is not just for your personal computer. Stick it on any computer that you come across (we suggest starting with the ones at colleges and in Internet cafés).

Simpoo starts his day with aloo de parantha and mango aachar and later dines on aloo gobhi and sarson da saag.

Outlining Simpoo’s plans, Amar K. Deb, head of Channel [V], said, “Simpoo’s on a mission … to ensure that animals across the world are treated with love and respect. As a mascot who is loved by Channel [V] viewers across the country, Simpoo is confident of spreading the message of the ethical treatment of animals. Simpoo’s equity with our viewers is very high. It’s cool, hip and very healthy to be a vegetarian, and Simpoo will deliver this message in true Channel [V] style”.

Among its other actions for animals, [V] now has a “PETA Zone” feature on its Web site, www.VIndia.com, so that people can learn more about animal rights.
