Dishoom’s Radar detects a flock of famous folks stepping forward to help animals
For instance, the alluring and awesome actor-turned-animal-rights-activist Amala Akkineni helped PETA India unveil its chicken report in the tech city of Hyderabad. "It's a ground breaking report revealing all the facts and figures of the condition of poultry in India", said Amala, who runs the Blue Cross of Hyderabad, an animal welfare society she founded in 1992. The report, which is the result of five years of investigations in poultry farms across India, exposes the abusive treatment of chickens in factory farms, details the health hazards of eating eggs and chickens, and gives recommendations for changes to be made at farms to reduce the suffering of chickens. Along with the report, we released a video that shows how chickens across India are crammed into tiny, filthy cages. Click here to read a comprehensive report, and click here to watch an investigative video. Let's see the "foul" poultry industry try to squirm out of this one!
Just as alluring and equally as awesome, actor Celina Jaitley recently teamed up with Maxim to help elephants sentenced to a lifetime of boredom, loneliness, abuse, and even danger in zoos and cities. In response to pressure from PETA India, Mumbai recently banned captive elephants within the city limits, something that the Bollywood bombshell fully supports: "After coming to Mumbai and visiting other parts of India, I have seen so many elephants who are kept in such bad conditions in captivity. I think PETA has taken a very good step, and I am proud to be associated with this cause. I have a huge youth fan following, and I know my fans will also support me in this cause", says Celina.
And although being beautiful helps, it was Celina's compassion for animals that landed her on the cover of the August issue of Maxim magazine. "Celina was perfect for our campaign 'Sexy for a Cause' with PETA because she's a talented, beautiful lady who is genuinely fighting against the kind of treatment that elephants get in this country", says Maxim editor Anup Kutty. "And since we love both animals and beautiful women equally, we just had to get her on the cover to promote the cause." We couldn't have said it better ourselves!
And speaking of beautiful people with big hearts, John Abraham has been using the power of the pen to "write" animal wrongs. Writing to Forest Minister Shri Babanrao Pachpute, the handsome model-turned-actor asked the official to ban madaris with monkeys from entering Mumbai and urged him to provide adequate rescue facilities for both performing monkeys and "dancing" bears. Extending his compassion to snakes, birds and other poorly treated "pet shop" animals, John also pleaded with the Forest Minister to do everything in his power to stop the cruel live-animal trade. A man who sticks up for all creatures, great and small? Could he be any more perfect?
