On Dishoom's Radar
With so many PETA pals taking the stage at awards ceremonies, we’re beginning to think that, in addition to sheer talent, karma is finally rearing its generous head.
Take Amitabh Bachchan, for instance. In a clean sweep, he won “Best Actor” at both the Filmfare and Zee Cine awards and “Actor of the Year” at StarDust for his role in Black. To make things even more interesting, Amitabh’s son, Abhishek, scored “Best Supporting Actor” wins for his role in Sarkar at both the Zee Cine and Filmfare awards. Talk about a house party that is sure to last for days! We have just one question: Where exactly is Amitabh planning on putting all these newfound trophies, especially considering that he has won PETA India’s “Hottest Vegetarian Alive” contest for several years in a row? Prioritise, Amitabh – that’s all we’re saying!
When OutKast won three trophies at the Grammy Awards – “Best Urban-Alternative Performance” for “Hey Ya!” and “Best Rap Album” and “Album of the Year” for Speakerboxxx/The Love Below – the duo made history by becoming the first artists to produce a rap album that took most of the awards in top categories. So, when OutKast’s Andre 3000 became the first hip-hop artist to be named “Sexiest Vegetarian Alive” in an annual online poll by PETA, he was already used to being numero uno. Andre shared the honour with vegan actor Alicia Silverstone after more than 12,000 votes were cast. Previous winners include Tobey Maguire, Lauren Bush and Shania Twain. So what did Andre have to say about his latest crowning? Absolutely nothing. But when asked how he’d spend his last day on Earth, he answered, “I’d probably go for a great meal – some broccoli probably, because I’m a vegetarian”. Bless!
Last but not least is Hemant Trevedi. One of India’s foremost and most important fashion designers, he knows that there’s nothing luxurious about leather and makes stunning luxury fashion that is leather-free. Trevedi has also submitted signed statements to PETA India pledging not to use Australian merino wool until the cruellest aspects of its production stop. With that said, is it any wonder why he won PETA India’s first-ever Proggy Award for “Best Cruelty-Free Luxury Fashion”?
