The Sonik Gurus

The Sonik Gurus

What do Ranvir Verma, the long-time vegetarian songwriter and producer, and Ash Chandola, the pioneer of the celebrated Swaraj nightclub and record label, have in common besides making legendary music as the Sonik Gurus? Both musicians have joined PETA’s boycott of KFC until the fast-food giant ends the worst abuses of chickens raised and killed to fill its buckets. Check out Ranvir and Ash in PETA’s new video public service announcement (PSA), and visit www.KentuckyFriedCruelty.com to learn about how KFC abuses the more than 850 million chickens raised and killed for the company each year.

Why are Ranvir and Ash fed up with KFC? KFC chickens are drugged and bred to grow so large that many become crippled from the weight of their massive upper bodies, their throats are slit and they are scalded to death in defeathering tanks – often while they are still conscious. An undercover investigation at a KFC “Supplier of the Year” slaughterhouse in the United States revealed that workers were stomping on live birds, tearing their heads off, spitting tobacco into their eyes and spray-painting their faces. KFC ignored the advice of its own animal welfare advisors, five of whom have since resigned after being ignored for years. Former KFC advisor Adele Douglass told the Chicago Tribune that KFC “never had any meetings. They never asked any advice, and then they touted to the press that they had this animal-welfare advisory committee. I felt like I was being used”.

The Sonik Gurus join fellow musicians Sir Paul McCartney, P!nk, Anoushka Shankar, Dead Prez, Good Charlotte, Goldfinger, The Darkness and the Black Eyed Peas in supporting PETA’s “Kentucky Fried Cruelty” campaign.

“Did you know that chickens are just as smart as cats and dogs?” asks Ranvir. “To help chickens, don’t eat at KFC.”
