Looking Good Cruelty-Free

Summer Time Is Lush Time

LushAlthough summer has been a part of our lives since birth, we always seem to forget that with the good (sunshine!), comes the bad (stickiness!). In theory, we can simply roll out of bed, throw on a cotton shirt and hit the streets. But as soon as we embrace this simplicity, we remember that, as was the case with every summer before, in no time we’re going to be sweating like a busted dam.

Lush to the rescue.

Lush is one of the most recognised cruelty-free personal-care product companies in the world. The people of Bangalore are fortunate enough to have a Lush store nearby, but, for the time being, the rest of us will have to make do with online ordering at www.LushIndia.com.

Lush StoreIf you’re not down with placing orders online, you will be soon, because the folks at Lush India take fresh fruits and vegetables, essential oils and safe synthetics and turn them into the most delicious-smelling bath products, lotions and potions that you will ever come across. Lush products are freshly handmade and are not tested on animals, and none of the ingredients are animal-derived. While all Lush products are suitable for vegetarians, those that are straight-up vegan are clearly marked with a big green V (which is kinda hard to miss). With that said, is it any wonder why we gave Lush the first ever PETA India Proggy Award for “Best Cruelty-Free Personal-Care Products”?

In fact, we’re so dazzled by Lush that it is difficult to choose our favourite products, but we managed to complete this most difficult task just for you. Thank us later.

And the Winners Are …

  • Black-Ancient Wisdom From Asia is a “lightening lemon, lime and Indian sandalwood flavoured” tooth gel that not only makes your teeth super clean, bright and white, but it’s black. Yes, you heard us correctly – it’s black, because it’s made of charcoal, which the fine folks at Lush discovered to be one of the best ingredients for a sparkling mouth. Frankly, it could be polka-dotted for all we care, because all that matters is that it works like a charm.

  • Next, it’s time for The Olive Branch, a cheerful shower gel named after the Leonard Cohen song “Dance Me to the End of Love”. The song goes a little something like this: “Lift me like an olive branch ’til I’m safely gathered in …” and, according to Lush, that’s exactly the feeling you’ll have when you smell its fragrance of Sicilian mandarin juice. Job well done, Lush: Now we want to spend the rest of our days dancing in the shower, singing Cohen and smelling of mandarins. What used to take 10 minutes now takes three hours. Oh, well. We’ll get over it eventually.

  • About your hair: Is it looking a little crunchy? Or do you simply want to maintain your silky smooth coif? Either way, it’s time to indulge in some Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo. Why? Because Lush makes this little concoction with a “well-known brand of Irish stout” that it heard was really good for cleaning, softening and smoothing all hair types. As it turns out, the folks at Lush are correct. But even if they were dead wrong, who cares? Rub this into your hair and you’ll smell absolutely edible – in fact, we can barely resist ourselves after we hop out of the shower these days.

  • The final touch? For the ladies, we recommend Candy Fluff, a glittery dusting powder with a soft hint of fragrance that drives men, women, children, dogs, cats and plants (and even weeds) absolutely nuts. We know this because we’ve experienced the mayhem. Give it a shot – you’ll see.

  • Gents, check out Aromarant, a lemon- and herb-scented deodorant block made with fresh lemons because, according to Lush, “they are astringent and cooling and good for armpits”. Good enough answer for us, and guys, you will love it (as will the ladies)!
There you have it. You will officially be the best-smelling person on your block all summer long. Enjoy the attention. And you’re welcome.
